Pineapple Margarita "Margtini"
Pineapple Margtini is the perfect poolside sipper! Enjoy!

The Pineapple Margarita Margtini is my warm-weather, sunny-afternoon, poolside-sipping cocktail of dreams. Tequila, tropical pineapple juice, fresh lime, and a splash of orange liqueur, all shaken hard with ice and served in a tajin- or salt-rimmed martini glass with a fresh pineapple wedge. It is a margarita and a martini had a baby, and that baby is gorgeous and delicious.
I love this drink because it has all the punch of a classic margarita with the elegance of a martini presentation. The pineapple juice softens the tequila and adds that tropical sweetness that makes it dangerously drinkable. The lime juice keeps it balanced and refreshing. The orange liqueur ties everything together with citrus depth. And the tajin-rimmed glass adds a salty-spicy-tangy kick that hits every time you take a sip.
The key to a great cocktail is the shake. Forty seconds of vigorous shaking with ice is what gives you that perfectly chilled, slightly diluted drink that is silky on the palate. Under-shaken margaritas are warm and harsh. Well-shaken ones are smooth and cold. Use the longest shake you can stand, your guests will thank you.
This drink is perfect for pool parties, beach days, summer barbecues, brunch with friends, or just a Tuesday evening when you want to feel like you are on vacation. Easy to scale up for a crowd by mixing in a pitcher and shaking individual servings with ice when serving. Cheers!

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
Tequila: 1.5 ounces of tequila blanco (silver). Patron, Don Julio, Espolon, or Casamigos are all great choices. Use a quality tequila, the cheap stuff makes for a harsh drink.
Pineapple juice: 2 ounces. 100% pineapple juice, not from concentrate. Dole is great. Look for fresh in the produce section if you can find it.
Lime juice: Half a lime juiced, about 1 tablespoon. Fresh only. Bottled lime juice tastes flat and harsh.
Orange liqueur: 1 ounce. Cointreau is the gold standard. Triple sec works as a substitute. Grand Marnier is fancier.
Ice: Plenty for shaking. Cubed ice melts more slowly than crushed.
Tajin or salt: For the rim. Tajin is a Mexican chili-lime salt blend (find in the Mexican foods aisle). Regular salt also works for a classic margarita rim.
Pineapple wedge: A fresh slice for garnish. Char it on a grill or hot pan for an extra-special smoky tropical flavor.
Glassware: A martini glass or coupe glass for the 'margtini' presentation. A rocks glass also works for a more casual look.
How to Store, Reheat & Freeze
Best served immediately after shaking. The ice dilutes and chills the drink to perfection in the moment, but the flavor degrades as it sits. If pre-mixing for a party, combine all ingredients except ice in a pitcher and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Shake individual servings with ice when ready to serve.
For a make-ahead frozen version, blend the drink with extra ice in a blender, pour into a freezer-safe container, and freeze. Thaw slightly before serving as a slushy.
What to Serve With Pineapple Margaritas
This drink is perfect poolside, beachside, or any summer gathering. Pair with Mexican food (tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, taquitos), tropical dishes (grilled pineapple chicken, coconut shrimp, jerk chicken), or just chips and guacamole. For appetizers, pair with sheet pan fajitas, taquitos, or chips and salsa. For desserts, key lime pie, coconut cream pie, or a fresh fruit platter. Set up a margarita bar for a party with this version alongside classic margaritas and other flavor variations.
๐ก Tips for Success
- Use 100% pineapple juice, not pineapple drink or cocktail. Look for 'not from concentrate' for the freshest flavor. Dole pineapple juice in the can or bottle is great.
- Fresh lime juice is non-negotiable. Bottled lime juice tastes flat and sour without any brightness. Squeeze half a lime fresh for the best margarita.
- Cointreau is the gold standard for orange liqueur. Triple sec works but is harsher and sweeter. Grand Marnier is fancier and more cognac-y. Each gives a slightly different flavor.
- Shake VIGOROUSLY for 40 full seconds. This is the secret to a great margarita. The shaking chills, dilutes, and aerates the drink to perfection.
- Tajin is the perfect rim seasoning for this drink. It is a Mexican blend of chili, lime, and salt. Find it in the Mexican foods aisle. Salt also works for a classic margarita feel.
- Wet the rim with a fresh lime wedge before dipping in tajin or salt. The lime juice is what makes the seasoning stick.
- Use a martini glass for the 'margtini' presentation. A coupe glass or rocks glass also works but you lose the martini-glass elegance.
- Garnish with a fresh pineapple wedge on the rim of the glass. Even better, char the pineapple wedge on a hot grill or pan for a smoky tropical flavor that elevates the whole drink.
โ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this frozen?
Absolutely. Blend all ingredients with 2 cups of ice in a blender until smooth. Pour into a tajin-rimmed glass and garnish. A frozen pineapple margarita is incredible on a hot summer day.
Can I batch this for a party?
Yes. Multiply the recipe by however many drinks you need (skip the ice for shaking) and mix in a pitcher. Refrigerate. Shake individual servings with ice when serving, or pour over crushed ice in tajin-rimmed glasses straight from the pitcher.
What is the difference between a margarita and a martini?
Margaritas are tequila-based with citrus and orange liqueur, traditionally served in a salt-rimmed glass with ice. Martinis are gin or vodka with vermouth, traditionally served in a martini (stemmed) glass. This 'margtini' is a margarita served in a martini glass for elegance.
Can I make this without alcohol?
Yes. Skip the tequila and orange liqueur. Mix pineapple juice with fresh lime juice and a splash of orange juice. Add a splash of sparkling water for fizz. Still delicious as a mocktail.
What tequila is best?
Tequila blanco (silver) is the traditional margarita choice. Patron Silver, Don Julio Blanco, Espolon Blanco, or Casamigos Blanco all work great. For a smoother version, use a reposado (briefly aged tequila).
Can I make this spicy?
Absolutely. Muddle a slice of jalapeno in the shaker before adding the other ingredients. Or use a jalapeno-infused tequila. The heat pairs incredibly well with pineapple and lime.
What other tropical fruit margaritas are good?
Mango, passion fruit, guava, watermelon, and strawberry all work great. Use 2 ounces of fruit juice (or muddled fresh fruit) in place of the pineapple juice. The technique stays the same.
