Soon to be Famous - CHEX MIX
Soon to be famous, or so I wish :) Lets just say it is that good! The best part is that you can customize the measurements for the components for what you want more of. Want more pretzels? Decrease the amount of Bugles - etc! Enjoy!

This Chex Mix is the recipe I joke is 'soon to be famous' because every single time I bring it somewhere, people lose their minds and ask for the recipe. The combination of Chex cereal, Bugles, mini pretzels, corn nuts, sesame sticks, and a topping of wasabi peas, all coated in a buttery Worcestershire-seasoned blend and slow-baked until perfectly toasted. It is salty, savory, crunchy, addictive, and infinitely better than any store-bought snack mix you have ever had.
I love this recipe because it is fully customizable. The five-component base (Chex, Bugles, pretzels, corn nuts, sesame sticks) is what makes it special, but you can absolutely shift the ratios to whatever you love most. More pretzels? Cut back on the Bugles. Not a corn nut person? Sub in cheez-its or oyster crackers. The wasabi peas added at the end are the spicy crunchy surprise that takes this from regular Chex mix to 'whoa what is in this' territory.
The technique that makes this version stand out is slow-baking at 250 for a full hour with stirring every 15 minutes. Most Chex mix recipes either microwave (too unevenly seasoned) or oven-bake at higher heat (burns the edges). The 250-degree slow toast lets every piece develop deep, even color, dries out any residual moisture from the cereal, and concentrates that buttery Worcestershire flavor into every single bite.
Make a giant batch for game day, holidays, road trips, or just to keep in a big bowl on the counter for casual snacking. It also makes incredible homemade gifts in clear cellophane bags tied with a ribbon. Once you make it once you will be doubling the recipe forever. Let's make it.

- 4 1/2 cups Bugles
- 3 cups mini Pretzels

- 1 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
- 1 Container of Wasabi Peas (use how many you wish)
๐ฉโ๐ณ Directions
- 1
Pre-heat oven to 250
- 2
Grab the biggest bowl you have and combine chex cereal, bugles, mini pretzels, corn nuts, and sesame sticks. Stir easily to get mixed together
- 3
In a small sauce pan, heat butter until melted, then add Worcestershire, season salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir well, bring to a simmer, and simmer for 2 minutes then remove from heat.
- 4
Pour 1/2 of the butter mixture over the chex blend and easily stir well. Then pour the last 1/2 of the butter mixture over the chex and easily stir well.
- 5
Add chex mix to the largest baking sheet you have (or use 2) and put the chex mix into a single layer

Let cool for 10 minutes, then add Wasabi Peas on top. Serve in a bowl or in cute bags and enjoy!
Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
Chex cereal: 4.5 cups. Use rice Chex, corn Chex, wheat Chex, or a mix. A mix of two or three Chex varieties gives the prettiest mix.
Bugles: 4.5 cups. The cone-shaped corn snack adds a unique crunch and shape. Look for them in the chip aisle. Plain or honey BBQ flavor both work.
Mini pretzels: 3 cups. Use mini-twist pretzels or pretzel sticks broken into pieces. Avoid huge sourdough pretzels, they overwhelm the mix.
Corn nuts: 2 cups (a full 7-ounce bag). The crunchiest, saltiest component. Original or BBQ flavor both work.
Sesame sticks: 1.5 cups. The slightly herby seedy crunch that ties everything together. Find them in the bulk bins or with the trail mix.
Butter: 1.5 sticks (12 tablespoons). Real butter. Margarine does not give the same flavor.
Worcestershire sauce: 3.5 tablespoons. The umami backbone of Chex mix. Lea & Perrins is the classic brand.
Seasoning salt: 2.5 teaspoons. Lawry's brings the seasoned-salt depth that plain salt cannot.
Garlic powder: 2 teaspoons. Even granulated garlic distribution throughout the mix.
Onion powder: 1.5 teaspoons. Layers on another aromatic note.
Wasabi peas: One container, added after baking. Use as many as you like. They bring spicy crunch and a surprise pop in random bites.
How to Store, Reheat & Freeze
Cool the Chex mix completely on the pans before transferring to storage. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. The mix stays crunchy and the flavor actually deepens over the first few days.
To freeze, cool completely and store in airtight containers or freezer bags for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature for about an hour before serving. The texture stays great after freezing.
What to Serve With Chex Mix
This is the ultimate snack for game day, holiday parties, road trips, movie nights, and casual entertaining. Serve in a big bowl or in individual cute bags for a party. Pair with cheese boards, sliced veggies and dip, mini sausages, and other appetizers for a spread. For drinks, ice-cold beer (especially lager or amber ale), Bloody Marys, or a margarita all pair beautifully. It also makes incredible homemade gifts packed into clear cellophane bags tied with ribbon for neighbors, teachers, or hostess gifts.
๐ก Tips for Success
- Use the biggest mixing bowl you own. The combined volume of all the cereals and crunchies is huge, and you need room to toss everything together without spilling.
- Heat the butter mixture in a saucepan until it just simmers. This blooms the seasonings into the butter and creates an emulsion that distributes flavor evenly. Cold or barely melted butter does not coat well.
- Pour the butter mixture over the cereal in TWO additions, not one. Half first, stir, then the rest. This guarantees every piece gets fully coated without you needing to over-stir and break things.
- Use the LARGEST sheet pan you have, or use two pans. Crowded cereal does not toast evenly, it steams. Spread everything in a thin single layer.
- Stir every 15 minutes for the full hour. This is non-negotiable for even baking. The pieces on the edges toast faster than the middle, and stirring rotates them.
- If using two pans, swap their oven rack positions each time you stir. The pan closer to the heat source toasts faster, so swapping keeps things even.
- Add the wasabi peas AFTER baking, not before. Baking destroys the wasabi flavor and dries out the peas into something unpleasant. Adding at the end keeps them fresh and spicy.
- Let the mix cool completely on the pans before bagging or storing. Warm Chex mix steams in a container and loses its crunch. Wait at least 30 minutes after baking.
โ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I customize the components?
Absolutely. The ratios are flexible. More pretzels, less Bugles. Add Cheez-Its or cheddar cheese crackers. Substitute oyster crackers for some of the cereal. Just keep the total volume around 16 to 18 cups of crunchies so the butter mixture coats everything well.
What if I do not like wasabi peas?
Leave them out, or substitute with dry-roasted peanuts, smoked almonds, or any salty crunchy nut. The wasabi peas are the spicy surprise but the mix is still great without them.
Can I make this in the microwave?
Yes but the oven method is significantly better. If using microwave, microwave the mix in a large microwave-safe bowl in 1-minute increments, stirring between each, for about 5 to 6 minutes total. The texture will not be as evenly toasted but it works in a pinch.
How long does it keep?
Stored in an airtight container at room temperature, this Chex mix stays fresh and crunchy for up to 2 weeks. It does not last that long in my house because everyone eats it, but the shelf life is solid.
Can I freeze it?
Yes. Cool completely and freeze in airtight containers or freezer bags for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature for an hour before serving. The texture stays great.
Can I make this without Worcestershire sauce?
Worcestershire is the key umami flavor that defines Chex mix. If you really must skip it, use 3 tablespoons of soy sauce plus 1 teaspoon of brown sugar as a substitute. Not quite the same but close.
Can I make this for a crowd?
Yes, double or triple the recipe easily. You will just need multiple sheet pans and more oven time (still 1 hour total but with more frequent stirring across more pans).
